In this episode of American Civil War & UK History podcast, host Daz was joined by a fellow co-founder of the Monuments for UK Veterans of the American Civil War Association to discuss the last British American Civil War veteran Samuel Lander Hough and his Friend Henry McGuinness.
Samuel Lander Hough enlisted in the 2nd New Jersey Cavalry and participated in the Battle of Egypt Station, which took place in December 1864. Later in life, he returned to England to his birthplace in Derby. During this time, he met a fellow veteran named Henry McGuinness, who served in the 65th New York Infantry and participated in all the major battles in the Eastern Theatre. The two would attend a Fourth of July celebration in London, England, in 1916, hosted by the London branch of U.S. Civil War Veterans. After their deaths, both were buried at Nottingham Road Cemetery in Derby Samuel Lander Hough passed away in 1940 and is The Last British American Civil War Veteran to die in the UK.
